In urban areas, food delivery services help families surmount these barriers. Due to long distances and sparse populations, in rural areas, food delivery services are generally unavailable.
Mountaineer Food Bank, an innovation lab grantee in West Virginia, partnered with DoorDash and Mercer County Schools to deliver food directly to the homes of families at-risk of food insecurity with children in school. The Mercer County Schools’ Integrated & Collaborative: Assistance, Resources, and Education (ICARE) program identified families in need and collaborated with Mountaineer Food Bank and DoorDash to obtain and deliver boxes of fresh food regularly to families’ homes. Human-centered design approaches ensured that the Extra Mile Program recognized and addressed families’ barriers to food security.
