Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Formative Research in the Districts of Angoche, Meconta and Liúpo, Nampula Province (Mozambique, 2025)

This formative research report examines the drivers of child marriage in Angoche, Meconta, and Liúpo districts in Nampula Province, Mozambique, to inform Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) programming. Using a mixed-methods, participatory approach, the study identifies interconnected social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors—such as poverty, gender norms, adolescent pregnancy, and climate shocks—that sustain early marriage practices. Findings highlight gaps in protection systems, service access, and law enforcement, alongside opportunities for community-led prevention. The report provides evidence-based, multi-level recommendations to strengthen systems, engage families and communities, and empower adolescents to prevent child marriage and improve child protection outcomes.
