Climate-related losses and damages, including the depletion of land, loss of life, disruption of livelihoods, and erosion of cultural heritage, stand as a significant injustice spanning generations, particularly affecting children today. Climate-related losses and damages pose a direct threat to the rights of both current and forthcoming generations of children.

Despite bearing the least responsibility for the climate crisis, the children of today and tomorrow are set to bear the brunt of its repercussions, including losses and damages.

Regrettably, discussions on climate policies and the allocation of climate finance routinely overlook children and their rights. In instances where children are considered, they are often perceived solely as vulnerable victims, disregarding their potential as active agents of change.

This report delves into the losses and damages directly impacting the rights and well-being of children, pinpointing 1) Opportunities for the United Nations’ Loss and Damage Fund, in conjunction with other financing mechanisms, to mitigate the adverse effects on present and future generations of children, 2) The imperative need for endeavors addressing loss and damage to be guided by the fundamental principle of upholding children’s rights. Furthermore, the report incorporates insights from workshops involving children aged 11-18. These workshops capture the firsthand experiences of children in the face of climate-related loss and damage, presenting their recommendations in their own words.
