A project involving the University of Johannesburg, University of Botswana and the National University of Lesotho, which contributes towards new knowledge about social work education in Africa. The research analysed the knowledge development in understanding a social development paradigm within the African context and answered questions about how the social development approach is being used by the individual schools of social work in the region. The research objectives of the project were:• To investigate and determine the nature of social work education (with a particular emphasis on developmental social work education) in Southern and East Africa • To generate tentative ideas for a regional indigenous social work education approach. The networking and relationship building objectives of this project were: • To establish an accurate list and supportive regional network of schools of social work functioning in Southern and East Africa, which can also be useful for the promotion of the Association of Schools of Social Work in Africa (ASSWA).
