Child Poverty and Deprivation in Mali: The First National Estimates

This study provides the first ever estimates of national child poverty and deprivation rates in Mali using the Multiple Overlapping Deprivations Approach (MODA). Deprivations were defined according to the age of the child; four distinct age groups with corresponding deprivation dimensions were assigned.

Research concluded that the national child deprivation rate in Mali is 50%, slightly higher than the national (monetary) child poverty rate of 46%. The overlap of children who are both poor and deprived is 29% of all children, meaning that not all children who are deprived are living in poverty as defined by the national poverty line.

Across Mali, the correlation between deprivation and poverty rates is uneven. The report explores this phenomenon and poses its reasoning as to the causes and correlations between deprivation and poverty.
