The report ‘Stolen Childhoods: A Study of Child Trafficking in the Kosi Region of Bihar”, India, prepared by Save the Children, shows that out of 8,252 children surveyed in two districts, 639 (7.7% ), had been trafficked. There are fears that the problem will increase, fuelled by a rise in migration from North East India to metropolitan areas elsewhere in the country and by border crossings into neighbouring countries. This study, which provides an estimate for child trafficking victims in the Kosi region of Bihar, urges policy makers to address extreme poverty in the region and take adequate measures to prevent children from being trafficked.
