Through a 2006 legislative reform, the responsibility for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children’s care and living situation was transferred to Swedish municipal authorities, a task previously undertaken by the Swedish Migration Board and Migration Courts, the two instances that bear responsibility for asylum procedures in Sweden. Two years on, Save the Children Sweden presents this follow-up report, which shows that much has improved with regard to asylum-seeking minors not under parental authority, but that there are other things that need to be done. Local governments, for instance, have different rules and routines regarding the investigation of asylum-seeking children, classification and housing assignment practices vary, and the role of the trustee or guardian appointed to assist these children is unclear.
