Social accountability (SA) generally refers to a process, a subset of accountability, which consists of a meaningful effort for collective engagement with public institutions for accountability in the provision of services for the betterment of the public. SA mechanisms have been considered an important tool to strengthen the public health system in delivering services, improving governance, monitoring public resources, and developing infrastructures. SA interventions are rarely implemented in the public health system of Bangladesh, though they have been implemented in elsewhere in Asia and Africa, particularly in South Asia, with mixed results.
This report documents an endline study by USAID’s MaMoni Maternal and Newborn Care Strengthening Project’s (MNCSP) project in Bangladesh of SA interventions in selected districts, which aimed to capture lessons from their implementation. The study captures clients’ and providers’ knowledge on SA mechanisms, as well as local government institutions’ (LGI) engagement and contributions to the SA process.
