In Bangladesh, there is very high patient traffic in government healthcare facilities. An important part of the work of health care providers has to do with documentation of services provided. The existing paper-based and manual recording and reporting system in Bangladesh added pressure to healthcare providers in providing quality services. In addition, the lack of queue management system created chaos in the service rooms and led to patient disappointment. The lack of a digital mechanism to register and keep patient records created problems in recording data, making reports based on that data, and making decisions. The lack of synchronization of inter-departmental data also created a delay in providing service to patients.
To alleviate these problems and to improve patient experience at government facilities, the Bangladesh government initiated an automated hospital information system targeting district and upazila hospitals by using OpenMRS – an open-source medical record system. This report documents USAID’s Maternal and Newborn Care Strengthening Project (MNCSP)’s support to this effort, and learning gathered from the introduction of a customized version of the OpenMRS at Manikganj District Hospital and Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex.
