In Mali, maternal and neonatal mortality remains high, with 325 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 33 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 368 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 34 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births five years prior. Neonatal deaths, the majority of which occur in the first week of life, represent a third of infant mortality in Mali, premature infants and low birth weight infants are the most vulnerable.
Faced with this situation, the Government of Mali, in collaboration with its partners, is committed to amplifying effective measures to combat maternal, neonatal, and infant morbidity. Thus, since 2014, the Services project de Santé à Grand Impact (SSGI) funded by USAID / Mali supports the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (MSAS), through the General Directorate of Health and Public Hygiene (DGSHP) and the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP), to reduce morbidity and mortality in women and children under five years of age SSGI has been guided by three axes aimed at improving demand, access, and quality of maternal health services, neonatal and infant (MNCH) within a system of health strengthened.
