Caesarean (C-)section for childbirth is a major obstetric intervention for saving the lives of women and their newborns from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications. This document is the Government of Bangladesh training manual on the ROBSON classification system, which is a tool that monitors and compares C-section rates, both in the same setting over time and between different settings. It considers every patient in labour and helps to analyze signs for a C-section, as well as options for vaginal delivery in 10 groups (based on specific criteria, such as prior births, history of C-section, among others). The objective is to ultimately help reduce the alarmingly high rate of caesarean sections. This manual will help to develop capacities of service providers on this system and guide managers at various levels in Bangladesh to monitor and rationalize C-sections, as required.
