Summary of the outcome of mapping and assessing Kenya’s Child Protection System. Strengths, weaknesses and recommendations

This paper provides a summary of the outcome of the mapping and assessment of Kenya’s Child Protection Systems processes, including the current strengths, weaknesses and major gaps of Kenya’s child protection system. Legislation and policies for child protection are in many cases contradictory, often resulting in procedural and substantive confusion, with many policies being adopted, but not implemented, monitored or evaluated. The paper concludes with recommendations for action and the way forward, based on: ensuring agreement between stakeholders on the priority gaps; developing a child protection strategy/workplan on how to implement the priority gaps over the next four years, including a cost analysis of the implementation of the gaps; and ensuring that the outcomes of the child protection strategy document are captured in the amendment of the Children Act.
