South African Gauge 2012. Cape Town: Children’s Institute, University of Cape Town

The South African Child Gauge is the only publication in the country that provides an annual snapshot of the status of South Africa’s children. It is published by the Children’s Institute, University of Cape Town, to track South Africa’s progress towards realising children’s rights. The 2012 issue focuses on the theme ‘Children and inequality: closing the gap’.
The report is divided into three main sections: Part one : Children and law reform, discusses recent legislative developments affecting children; Part two: Children and inequality: Closing the gap, presents 10 essays – the first four essays set the scene by defining children’s equality rights and explaining the nature and extend of inequality, the spatial dimensions of child deprivation in South Africa, and the impact of place, care and migration on children’s lives; and Part three: Children Count – the numbers, gives an update of a set of key indicators on children’s socio-economic rights and provides commentary on the extent to which these rights have been realised.
