A sixth of the world’s population is estimated to live in the 40 to 60 states that are considered to be fragile and need significant investment in state-building. Fragile states struggle to deliver key functions such as maintaining security, enabling the market and delivering public services – for example, health.
There are many domains in which the health sector can contribute to wider state-building. This paper highlights the 6 areas in which the health sector can help build capacity and legitimacy in fragile states.
