Save the Children’s quarterly activity report providing facts about Malawi, which since 2001 has achieved a 29 percent decline in newborn deaths—from 19,000 per year to 17,000 per year in 2010. In those 10 years, Save the Children, with the support of its many donors, has made significant contributions toward this achievement. The report also shares information on Save the Children’s HEART programme, currently being carried out by Save the Children in Haiti, Malawi, Mozambique and Nepal. The HEART programme uses the arts to promote children’s development and well-being by providing them with a creative means of expression. The programme targets young children living in communities affected by conflict, violence, HIV/AIDS or extreme poverty. Children learn how to use the arts to give voice to their emotions about difficult events in their everyday lives.
