In Bangladesh, an estimated 90,000 newborns die each year. The leading causes of these deaths are newborn infections, birth asphyxia, prematurity-related complications, and low birth weight. High-quality specialized neonatal care can prevent most of these deaths. This brief summarizes USAID’s MaMoni Maternal and Newborn Care Strengthening Project’s (MaMoni MNCSP) work to support the Government of Bangladesh to establish new special care newborn units (SCANUs) and strengthen existing SCANUs to ensure the quality of care for sick newborns as per national guidelines in 17 districts throughout the country, and to help end preventable deaths of newborns.
