On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the epidemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as a pandemic. The virus now affects many countries and territories including the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is essential that communities take steps to prevent the spread of the virus and reduce the impact of the epidemic.

COVID-19 can quickly change the living environment of children. Quarantine measures such as school closings (decided in the DRC from March 19, 2020 for a period of 4 weeks) and restrictions on movement disrupt the rhythms and social environment of children. They are also additional stressors for parents and caregivers, who may need to seek new child care or give up going to work. The stigma and discrimination associated with COVID-19 can further expose children to violence and psychological distress; and in particular children at risk and particularly vulnerable. Moreover, children and families who are already vulnerable due to precarious socio-economic conditions or living in conflict zones or in situations of humanitarian crisis are particularly at risk.

In this context, the Child Protection Cluster invites actors in child protection, including state actors, to ensure the application of measures to prevent and combat COVID-19, in accordance with international standards, and to the recommendations of WHO. and national guidelines, continuing to provide essential child protection services without discrimination.
