There has been great progress in child survival over the past two decades. Despite this great progress, one child or young adolescent died every five seconds in 2018. The majority of these deaths occur before the age of five, and almost half during the first month of life due to treatable causes such as infectious diseases. The progress has also been uneven and largely dependent on country wealth. If these trends continue, 53 countries will not meet the SDG goal on under-five mortality by 2030.
This report presents trends in child mortality across the world, as well as the progress made toward meeting the SDG targets by 2030.
