Between 1986 and 2005, violent conflict occurred across the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan in Sudan. This paper is the results of 162 interviews conducted with the local population and authorities, as well as civil society, and international actors. This paper compiles key lessons as well as suggestions for strong peace protection.  It also offers recommendations on how to engage in preparedness efforts of communities for potential future conflicts. Finally, this report looks at lessons learned and capacity-building for self-protection, and how it could be facilitated.
