La Loteria del Nacimiento directs attention towards the global and national progress that has been made to reduce child mortality and poverty worldwide. This report is based on an initial analysis of disaggregated data from 87 low and middle-income countries.
Through an examination of child survival – between sub-national regions, urban areas and rural areas, ethnic groups and economic groups, this study explores a series of fundamental questions:
• What is the magnitude of the problem?
• Is inequitable progress in the reduction of unemployment unavoidable?
• Does focusing on marginalized groups lead to slower progress?
• What can be done to help countries follow a more equitable path in order to ensure that marginalized groups reach lower child mortality rates?
The findings from this study suggest that equitable progress is not only possible but also quicker than initially perceived. This contradicts the widespread belief that working with poor and marginalized groups is more difficult and less likely to show progress.
