Save the Children Northern Ireland
Based on qualitative research, data analysis and a review of the evidence, this report examines the role the social security system plays in enabling families to meet their children’s needs and reduce child poverty in Northern Ireland.
It finds that families, in and out of work, are struggling to afford essentials and, even with support from the welfare system, they are relying on family, friends and charity for basics like food and clothing.
It also finds that too often the welfare system is harming, not helping families. Rules in the system lead to debt, hardship and even homelessness, and have a deep impact on families.
The report recommends that immediate steps are taken to increase financial support for children and, in the longer term, take steps to ensure all families are treated with dignity and care.
