Innovation and Action in Funding Girls’ Education

To answer questions about trends and gaps in girls’ education, the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution completed a survey of funding for girls’ education in developing countries during the winter of 2014. The survey asked questions about funding mechanisms, activities and special populations targeted, as well as links to affinity groups. This was coupled with interviews and a literature review with the result being a robust report on innovation and activities in funding girls’ education.

Among the findings is a presentation of how funding characteristics for education exist in current funding practices amongst different institutions. One such characteristic being that 87% of multilateral and bilateral institutions mainstream gender in their programs and projects, while more than half of foundation and corporation respondents reported that they mainstream gender.

This research is meant to contribute to the global movement of girls’ education and, through a series of recommendations, change how institutions approach funding for girls’ education.
