Civil society organizations are promoting children’s involvement in reporting to United Nations human rights mechanisms, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), to ensure government accountability and the fulfillment of child rights. The CRC Committee acknowledges the increasing participation of children in reporting and emphasizes the need for stronger focus on involving them in follow-up activities with coalitions and governments.

To facilitate peer learning and provide guidance on child-friendly engagement, a regional learning event is being organized by key child rights networks and partners. The event aims to highlight the diverse ways in which children in Asia and the Pacific have been involved in follow-up activities related to human rights reporting. It also intends to inspire children and their adult supporters to become more actively engaged in reporting, monitoring, and advocacy for human rights.

While engaging children requires considerable time, human resources, and financial support, it is essential for civil society organizations to legitimize their work and advocate for children’s rights. By involving diverse groups of children, it reinforces the message to governments that policies, decisions, and actions must be driven by the agenda of the children themselves, as encapsulated by the motto, “Nothing about us, Without us!”
