There is a clear need for improved case management of pneumonia, through the sustainable implementation of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) diagnostic and treatment algorithms, as case fatality rates remain high in Nigeria. The study explores barriers and opportunities for its implementation in Lagos and Jigawa states.
It found that the priority areas for improvement are training and mentoring of health care providers, community health education, and the introduction of oximeters and oxygen supply.
This study was funded by Save the Children through the GSK Partnership.
