Gender, Youth and Urban Labour Market Participation: Evidence from the catering sector in Lira, Northern Uganda

This study seeks to understand how labour markets actually work in insecure and dynamic contexts, based on the idea that creation of good jobs and decent work in conflict-affected areas creates wealthier economies, safer societies, and legitimate states.

Analysis is conducted in the catering sector of Lira, a town in post-conflict northern Uganda. It finds that Lira’s urban labour market is not meeting the needs of the town’s youth: poorly paid, stressful and insecure, little chance for promotion, and high instances of horizontal mobility (quickly abandoning one position for another of the same caliber).
