The “Proyecto Sin Dejar Atrás a la Niñez” (Without Leaving Childhood Behind Project) was implemented by Save the Children and funded by Norad from 2019 to 2023 in Guatemala. The project aimed to improve children’s rights through better laws, public policies, and increased investment in childhood. It focused on enhancing education quality, protecting children from violence, and ensuring the implementation of children’s rights with active participation from children, local civil society organizations, and government institutions.
The project was executed in 54 schools across three departments: El Quiché, Chiquimula, and Guatemala City, involving 228 directors and teachers, 7,649 children, and 879 parents and caregivers. Key results included increased school enrollment, particularly for children with disabilities, improved educational outcomes, and enhanced safety within schools. The project also promoted non-violent parenting practices, resulting in a significant reduction in the use of physical punishment by parents and caregivers.
Teachers’ professional competencies were strengthened through training and the development of inclusive educational materials. Schools implemented risk management and conflict resolution strategies, creating safer learning environments. Community Protection Committees (CCPs) were established, actively engaging in child protection and promoting positive parenting practices.
The project also strengthened rights-guaranteeing institutions, leading to increased budget allocations for child protection and education. Advocacy efforts resulted in the development of municipal public policies and increased fiscal resources for childhood programs. The project facilitated children’s active participation in advocacy and reporting on their rights, contributing to a stronger civil society.
Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in partner organizations, the project achieved significant results. Recommendations for future phases include focusing on fewer, more impactful indicators, continuing capacity-building for public officials, and sustaining advocacy efforts to enhance children’s rights.
