After the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) was put into place. Based on a pilot project, this paper focuses on challenges and describes the experience of local capacity development for Tsunami Early Warning (TEW) in Indonesia. Awareness from the public about the Disaster Risk Reduction paradigm (DRR) is substantially low and needs to be strengthened. According to this paper, it goes hands in hand with the establishment of clear international arrangements, at a local and national level.
