Save the Children
Access to sport for children with special needs remains a much neglected issue. Disabled children often have limited access to recreational activities and sports participation within the school system. This recent study by Save the Children is meant to be a springboard to trigger debate, make the problem better known and move it up the public and policy agenda in Peru. The study, which was carried out in 15 schools in Lima Metropolitan area, Lima Provinces and Junín, revealed that the schools lacked the necessary equipment, facilities and training opportunities for disabled children and young people. It is our responsibility to ensure that children with disabilities have equal access with other children to participation in play, recreation and sporting activities. Physical activity is an essential component of school-based child development.
