Ending Malnutrition for Every Last Child in Vietnam

Vietnam has experienced remarkable economic growth in the last 20 years, tens of millions have been lifted out of poverty during this time. However, economic development has not been equal across the nation; it has mainly been concentrated in large cities and export-oriented regions. Ethnic minorities, poorer groups, and rural communities are still strugglng despite national success.

Children from ethnic minority communities have been especially vulnerable. In 2012, an estimated 32% to 37% of primarly minority children in the Northern Midlands and Mountaneous areas suffered from stunting. Some of the problems identified leading to these consequences in Vietnam were identified as: (1) Poverty, (2) Poor Sanitation, and (3) Limited Knowledge and Awareness of Nutrition.

As part of our Every Last Child campaign, Save the Children are working together with the Ministry of Health, Hanoi Medical University, and the National Institute of Nutrition to develop a training manual on maternal and child nutrition care. Furthermore, they provide training on antenatal care, focusing on breastfeeding, for 400 health workers in vulnerable Yen Bai and Thanh Noa provinces–amongst other interventions.
