Child-sensitive Social Protection in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities

A publication by the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF), prepared in collaboration with the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) as part of a series of background papers written to inform The African Report on Child Wellbeing 2013.  The paper explores social protection schemes in Africa through a child rights lens and identifies key dimensions of child-sensitive social protection programming and design. It examines the impact of existing programmes on children. It also highlights innovative approaches in child-sensitive social protection programming, drawn from Africa and other developing regions, and outlines key policy recommendations to improve the design and implementation of child-sensitive social protection interventions in Africa.
