‘Child protection violations and poverty in low- and middle-income countries’, published by the Overseas Development Index (ODI), asserts that abuse, exploitation and neglect of children is a serious and neglected social problem. More children globally are at risk of violence than are out of school or involved in child labour.
This research focuses on the relationship between poverty and different forms of violence against children. It establishes a strong relation between poverty and children’s risk of protection violations. The research continues by examining child protection interventions and linkages to anti-poverty programmes. Who do these programmes reach and can they be improved by a stronger poverty-reduction focus?
