Change and Continuity in Social Norms and Practices Around Marriage and Education in Nepal

Nepal has made measurable progress in terms of human development, human rights, gender parity, and access to education. However, these improvements are often felt unequally – young women and adolescent girls face highly discriminatory social structures that hinder their development capabilities and overall wellbeing.

At 51%, Nepal has one of the highest rates of early marriage. Child marriage is widely prevalent and gendered social norms around marriage resist change. As part of a multi-country two year study, this report looks at the current gendered practices that exist in Nepal from early marriage to educational practices. ODI recommends several policies and measures to help address resistant gender discriminatory norms in order to help increase girls’ capabilities.
