Child labour has become an increasingly important survival strategy in Côte d’Ivoire. It increased in the ‘80s because of a severe economic crisis, which further worsened after civil war broke out in the country in 2002. The use of children for labour exploitation is a result of the deterioration of traditional practices, such as relatives taking care of children or using children for light, legitimate labour. But these practices have changed and become more exploitative as poverty increases. The generalization, magnitude and gravity of the child labour situation in Côte d’Ivoire create dramatic scenarios. There is a need to sensitize the plight of working children in the country and open up opportunities for improvement and change.
