By law, serious crimes against children must be dealt with within 90 days. In the period from 2018 to 2022, more than one in three children had to wait more than 90 days for a decision, which is a greater proportion than at any time since 2011. At the same time, the average time to complete an investigation has increased to almost one hundred days in 2022. Despite the increase in investigation time there are also fewer preliminary investigations that lead to prosecution. Children victims of serious crimes risk having to wait far too long for redress as well as support, protection and treatment. Our report also shows large regional differences. Children victims of serious crimes receive different help depending on where in the country they live.
