Boys’ Parliament: The Parliamentary Sessions Model with Unaccompanied and Separated Children- A case study on promoting inclusion and participation of refugee and migrant children in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2021)

The case study on promoting inclusion and participation of refugee and migrant children in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) explores the Boys’ Parliament initiative implemented by Save the Children in reception centres for unaccompanied and separated refugee and migrant children (UASC) in BiH. The model was first introduced in the Bira Reception Centre and later replicated in Borici, Sedra, and Miral centres across the Una-Sana Canton in 2020-2021. The Boys’ Parliament provided a structured and safe platform for children to express their opinions, advocate for their needs, and actively participate in improving their living conditions. Through regular meetings, representatives elected by their peers raised issues related to accommodation, hygiene, safety, and access to activities, resulting in tangible improvements within the camps. Beyond addressing practical challenges, the Parliament fostered a sense of belonging, empowerment, and resilience among boys who have endured hardship and displacement. The case study highlights how meaningful child participation can strengthen protection systems and improve the overall well-being of refugee and migrant children, including UASC.
