Save the Children Sweden has completed a two-tiered study of children and youth sports. The first part of the study includes interviews with 351 children aged 10 to 15 on their experiences of selection, “topping”, and what is important for them when they play sports. In the second portion, 640 coaches for various sports teams share their perspectives on similar questions.
The study shows that 41% of children have experiences of being with a team where selection is practiced, i.e. where the best players are prioritized to play while the other team members sit on the bench, and that it is more common for male coaches to do this than female coaches.
Selection is shown to be less common in clubs where there exists a policy or guidelines for behaviour during practices and games. For more information about the study, visit Save the Children Sweden’s website.
