Balkans Migration and Displacement Hub Data and Trends Analysis: Regional overview (September – December 2017)

More than 5,000 refugees and migrants are estimated to have arrived to the Balkans countries (other than Greece) in the last four months of 2017, out of which about one-third were children. However, the data shows that the number of refugees and migrants present in the region did not increase, suggesting continuous onward movement. This analysis provides valuable insight into the migration and displacement trends in Bulgaria, FYROM, Romania, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina during the last four months of 2017. It details information about the number of people on the move, demography (age, sex, country of origin, etc) and routes in use, with a focus on children, particularly unaccompanied children.

This document is part of Data and Trend Analysis (DATA) initiative launched by Save the Children’s Balkans Migration and Displacement Hub (BMDH). The goal of this initiative is to synthesize valuable information on migration, especially on refugee and migrant children, and contribute to evidence-based programming and policy-making within the region, countries of origin and countries of destination.
