Inspiring: Integrated sustainable childhood pneumonia and infectious disease reduction in Nigeria, end of project report – April 2018 – MAY 2023

Pneumonia remains the single biggest cause of child death through infectious disease worldwide. In Nigeria, the disease is the cause of every fifth death in children under 5, claiming 162,000 young lives every year. The INSPIRING project (2018–2023) had the bold ambition to provide directly applicable evidence to catalyse change and contribute to an accelerated reduction in child deaths from pneumonia and other preventable infectious disease.

In partnership with GSK and research partners, Save the Children developed and co-designed the INSPIRING project through a highly iterative process in close
collaboration with government and community stakeholders in two very different contexts: Kiyawa local government authority (LGA) in Jigawa State and Ikorodu
LGA in Lagos State. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during this process, the project was able to quickly adapt and redesign interventions. Social and
behaviour change activities were delivered through scripted radio programmes, training was delivered in smaller batches over a longer period, and additional
funding by GSK facilitated donations of essential protective and medical equipment, including medical grade oxygen.

Generating evidence of the impact of this integrated approach, including its cost effectiveness, was key to the INSPIRING project, enabling continuous and wide dissemination to help inform future work to tackle pneumonia and possible scale-up across Nigeria and beyond.

This end of project report documents the process of implementation and evaluation for the INSPIRING programme, highlighting successes, challenges and lessons learned.A final research report covering impact evaluation, process evaluation and economic evaluation will be published later in 2023.
