Toolkit for Optimizing Cash-based Interventions for Protection from Gender-based Violence: Mainstreaming GBV considerations in CBIs and utilizing cash in GBV response

The Toolkit for Optimizing Cash-based Interventions for Protection from Gender-based Violence: Mainstreaming GBV Considerations in CBIs and Utilizing Cash in GBV Response aims to assist GBV and cash practitioners in:

  • collecting situational protection information on risks and benefits for affected populations with an age, gender, and diversity lens;
  • identifying community-based or self-protection mechanisms;
  • informing tailored and protective cash-based interventions; and
  • preparing a monitoring system that is based on identified protection risks and benefits.

The modular and adaptable toolkit  is divided into two sections:

  • Section I, designed for field-level cash practitioners, features a focus group discussion/interview tool and accompanying guidance to assess and mitigate potential risks, as well as a post-distribution monitoring tool and accompanying guidance to monitor risks;

  • Section II, designed for field-level GBV specialists, outlines a protocol to assess and address GBV survivors’ needs for cash assistance within GBV case management services, as well as a post-distribution monitoring tool and accompanying guidance to monitor risks and benefits.

Accompanying case studies (English only) are included that capture learning from field-testing the toolkit in three pilot settings: Jordan with Mercy Corps and IRC; Somalia with African Development Solutions; and Niger with Save the Children. An introductory webinar and PowerPoint is available at: Practical Tools for Integrating Cash and Gender-based Violence (GBV) Programming: Webinar and PowerPoint

The video below helps demystify the respective roles and responsibilities of cash and GBV actors in order to strengthen the prevention of and response to GBV and to optimize cash as a tool for displaced person’s recovery and resilience.
