Since February, 2013 Save the Children International Basic Education program has been implementing a project called “Tiwerenge ndi Ana Athu” (TiANA) in Zomba Rural education district. The project was funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). TiANA is an innovation under the All Children Reading Grand Challenge (USAID, World Vision International and AusAid) and phases out in September, 2014. Using Save the Children experience in its Literacy Boost programme, the project intended to underline the role of parents and the community in making reading a reality for all children. The TiANA project aimed at improving learner writing and reading skills in the lower primary through innovative community-based production and use of teaching and learning materials, in accordance with its name which translates from Chichewa as “Let us read together with our children.”

TiANA was being implemented in 10 schools in St. Anthony and Namadidi Zones in the area of Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba Rural Education District. TiANA’s value adding components included: Youth Literacy Movement (YLM) a grouping of secondary school graduates which garner support for camp reading and add intellectual capacity.
