Social transfers are regular, reliable, and direct transfers in cash and/or in kind to household’s suffering from poverty and deprivation. This paper examines, from the available evidence, the potential effects of social transfers on child protection outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.

Divided into four sections, this publication:

  1. reviews the basic concepts and approaches in social transfers and child protection
  2. assesses the effects of social transfer programmes on child protection risk factors and outcomes
  3. summarizes the main findings emerging from the study
  4. provides conclusions in the form of implications for research and practice
