Organised by the Bernard van Leer Froundation with support from the National Institute of Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Urban Development (Government of India), the conference Small Children, Big Cities: Building Smart Cities for Child-friendly 21st-century India brought together 206 professionals engaged in urban design, planning and infrastructure development. NGOs, activists, educationalists, social workers, media, and children from various cities were also present.

These experts shared good practices and innovations from India and around the world and deliberated on strategies and approaches to develop smart child-friendly cities in the country. These cities by their very nature and inclusive approach will also be responsive to the needs of women and the aged.
