From the early 1980s until 2007, children in northern Uganda had restricted access to education due to the existing armed conflict. However, between 2013-2018, children’s school attendance remained low and continued to decrease.

In this report, SLRC investigates the reasons why some households withdrew some children from school whilst others were able to send their children. Some of the explanations found in this research include the multiple lingering effects of the conflict, weak economic systems, changes to the social fabric, gender inequality, and consideration of the real gains a household can make to their livelihoods in the short term versus education in the long-term.
