Schools that Care: A review of linkages between children's education and care

This study explores the linkages between children’s education and their care, a linkage - argued here - not widely explored in the education or child protection sectors.

The report shows that children who live outside of families or who experience abuse and neglect do not benefit from advances in the availability of education for all. Children who live apart from parents or with distant relatives are less likely to be able to access school than children with parents or close relatives, finds the study.

Education and care sector planners are encouraged to work together on a long list of activities to help improve children’s access to safe schools and their academic performance. Education system planners are also encouraged to embrace a range of activities that include: education opportunities close to the home, flexible and responsible curriculum planning, and catch-up schooling for children left behind.
