Every five minutes, a child dies as a result of violence. Punitive violence by adults is by far the most common form of violence against children, with three out of four children aged 2 to 4 worldwide – close to 300 million – regularly subjected to physical and humiliating punishment. To discipline comes from the Latin word to educate. Teaching parents and children to solve issues without violence will benefit not only children, but also society as a whole. This high-level interactive event will give the opportunity to illustrate how the introduction of a law banning corporal punishment can lead to positive change and how positive discipline programmes promote non-violent child-rearing practices and changing perceptions and attitudes among parents, caregivers and other people working with children.
