Article 12 of the Convention on the Right of the Child (CRC) upholds children’s right to express opinions, be heard and have these views taken into account in decisions. The Committee on the Rights of the Child has issued a General Comment on Article 12 which elaborates on this right. This child friendly version, produced by Save the Children Sweden, highlights its general implications.
“Rights” are things every child should have or be able to do. All children and young people have equal worth and equal rights, regardless of their skin colour, religious beliefs, gender identity, or place of birth. This booklet will help you find out more about children’s right to be heard – as individuals, specific groups, and collectively. It extends to matters relating to health, education, child protection, child welfare, juvenile justice, and social protection, and the responsibility of governments, NGOs, policy-makers and international agencies on how to include children’s views and opinions in matters which affect them.
The document concludes with a glossay explaining some of the words and terminology used in the text.
