This draft concept note on Child Protection systems in Senegal, prepared by UNICEF/PTA, highlights the gap between the formal national protection systems in relation to the informal family and community practices for child protection, and the need for a more integrated approach. It specifically outlines the need to move from vertical approaches based on priority threats facing boys and girls (street life, sexual abuse, exploitation, violence against children, etc.) to a more strategic approach that addresses the structural root causes explaining poor child protection prevention and weak responses. The document is part of the preparations for and follow up to the Expert Consultation on Strengthening National Child Protection Systems (NCPS) held in Nairobi, 28th-30th September, in collaboration with key national and regional stakeholders across Sub-saharan countries actively engaged in systems-strengthening efforts to better protect children against abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation.
