Mobile Myanmar: The impact of social media on young people in conflict-affected regions of Myanmar

Save the Children Myanmar and The University of Sydney undertook this piece of research to examine the impact of social media use on youth living in two conflict-affected regions of Myanmar – Kayah and Rakhine States. The study focused on how youth engage with issues of hate speech, propaganda, fake news, rumours, incitement to violence, and the impact of that engagement on youth’s on and offline emotional well-being, attitudes, and behaviours. The research design was mixed-methods, consisting of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with youth (total 121 participants), Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with youth parents, teachers and community leaders (total 38 participants) - and a short social media use survey administered to all FGD participants and a convenience sample of participants recruited at youth centres, tea shops, universities, high schools, and other public spaces in each of the selected research sites (total 232 respondents).
