At the turn of the century, world leaders came together at the United Nations and agreed upon a set of 8 goals, as a pledge to uphold principles of human dignity, equality, and equity. Over the past 14 years, progress has been made for many of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Some have been achieved well ahead of their deadlines, while goals suffering little or no progress require stakeholders to focus their efforts.

This report is based on a master set of data compiled by an Inter-Agency and Expert Group on MDG Indicators. The data is robust and illustrates how, and in what ways, each development goal has been reached – or not reached.

Despite significant progress made in certain goals, such as reducing child mortality and improving education, some areas remain largely unchanged: there are still too many new cases of HIV infection, environmental sustainability has seen little to no progress.
