Legislative Frameworks for Child Survival. Save the Children Survival Campaign

In 2009, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer began supporting Save the Children International in relation to the implementation of the Save the Children 2010-2015 global strategy, including the set up of Save the Children's new groundbreaking international programming operations. The work culminated in this report which analyses the gaps and best pratices in legislation and enforcement relating to child survival across 15 countries. Following the Executive Summary in Chapter 2, the report is structured around the following chapters: Chapter 3 presents an overview of the international treaties and other legal instruments of most relevance to the issue of child survival; Chapter 4 focuses on certain priority target countries; Chapter 5 considers whether there are any particular legal factors that may help to explain the significant improvement in child mortality rates that have been observed in Brazil and Egypt since 1990; Chapter 6 contains a summary of best practice and recommendations based on the review of the target countries, Chapter 7 provides possible avenues of work, and at the end of the paper is the Acknowledgements section.
